The short answer
A wet room bathroom puts the shower and a freestanding tub together inside one waterproofed, glass-enclosed zone, usually with a curbless entry and a floor that slopes to a linear drain. Water can splash anywhere inside the wet zone without harm, so the space feels open and spa-like. It costs more than a standard tub and separate shower because the whole zone needs continuous waterproofing, a recessed or sloped floor, larger glass and careful drainage.

## How Is a Wet Room Built?
The wet zone is treated like one large shower. A continuous waterproofing membrane covers the floor and runs up the walls, with every seam, niche and valve penetration sealed. The floor slopes toward a linear drain, typically along the back wall or at the glass line, and a second drain near the tub is common so water from the tub overflow and filling does not have to travel far. Curbless entry means the wet-zone floor sits lower than the rest of the bath, which takes planning below the tile.

Glass separates the wet zone from the dry side of the room, either a fixed panel with an open walk-in or a full enclosure with a door for heat retention. The freestanding tub sits on the waterproofed floor, with a floor-mounted or wall-mounted filler. Large-format porcelain or stone with minimal grout is popular, though the floor still needs a slip-resistant finish. Shower valves, handheld sprayers, rain heads and niches all land on the waterproofed walls. Ventilation has to be strong because the whole zone gets wet every day.

| | Wet room | Standard tub plus shower |
| --- | -------- | ------------------------ |
| Layout | Tub and shower in one glass-enclosed wet zone | Tub and shower in separate spots |
| Waterproofing | Continuous membrane across the full wet zone | Membrane limited to the shower |
| Entry | Usually curbless | Curb or low threshold common |
| Drainage | Linear drain, often a second drain near the tub | Center or linear shower drain |
| Glass | Larger panels or full enclosure | Smaller shower enclosure |
| Relative cost | Higher: slab work, membrane and glass | Lower for the same finishes |

## What Does a Wet Room Take in a Florida Slab Home?
Most Southwest Florida homes are built slab-on-grade, so a curbless wet zone usually means cutting and lowering the slab where the shower floor goes, or building up the rest of the bathroom floor. Before any cutting, we confirm whether the slab is post-tensioned, which is common in newer Florida construction and cannot be cut without engineering because the steel cables inside are under high tension. Drain lines below the slab are rerouted at the same time. Older homes with conventional slabs are usually more straightforward.

Our humidity makes the waterproofing and ventilation non-negotiable. Moisture that slips past a membrane can feed mold inside walls quickly in this climate, so we flood test the wet zone before tile and size the exhaust fan for the room. Condo owners face a concrete structural slab and stacked plumbing, which often rules out recessing the floor, so a low curb may be the honest answer there; association approval comes first. Plumbing permits from Lee County, Bonita Springs or Collier County apply to drain relocation.

## Wet Room Questions

### Is a wet room more expensive than a regular bathroom remodel?
Usually, yes. A wet room needs a full waterproofing membrane across the whole zone, floor slope or slab work for curbless entry, more glass and often two drains. Finishes being equal, those items make it cost more than a layout with a separate tub and shower.

### Do wet rooms need two drains?
Not always, but it is common to place a linear drain in the shower area and a second drain near the tub. That keeps water from a filling or draining tub from crossing the floor and gives a margin of safety if one drain slows.

### Can I build a wet room in a condo?
Sometimes, with limits. Condo floors are structural concrete and plumbing is stacked, so lowering the floor for a curbless entry is often not allowed. A wet room with a low curb and approved drain locations is usually possible after association review.
