A walk-in tub has a watertight door and a built-in seat, so you step over a low threshold and bathe sitting upright. The cost goes beyond the tub itself: installation often needs a larger water heater, a dedicated electrical circuit for jets or heaters, new framing and wall finishes, and plumbing changes. ## When Does a Walk-In Tub Beat a Walk-In Shower?
A walk-in tub makes sense for someone who wants to soak, finds standing in a shower tiring, or uses warm water for joint comfort and relaxation. Most models fit a standard 60-inch tub alcove, though many are shorter and taller than a regular bathtub, with seats at chair height. Options include soaking-only, air jets, water jets, heated seats and inline heaters that keep the water warm. Fast-drain pumps shorten the wait, but you still sit in the tub as it fills and empties, which some people find chilly.

A curbless or low-threshold walk-in shower avoids that wait. With a fold-down bench, grab bars, a handheld shower on a slide bar and a slip-resistant floor, it works for caregivers and wheelchairs, and it appeals to more buyers at resale. ### How long does a walk-in tub take to fill and drain?
It varies with the tub size, faucet flow and drain pump. Expect several minutes for each, longer for deep models. Fast-fill faucets and powered drains help. Because you sit inside while it fills and empties, some people use a heated seat or keep a towel over their shoulders.

### Do I need a bigger water heater for a walk-in tub?
Often, yes. Many walk-in tubs hold more water than a standard bathtub, and the water has to arrive hot because you are already seated. We size the tank or tankless heater to the tub's capacity so the bath does not run lukewarm halfway through.
