The short answer
A shiplap wall is made of horizontal boards with a rabbeted edge that overlaps the next board, leaving a small, even gap between them. A wood accent wall is the broader family: shiplap, vertical slats, board and batten, tongue-and-groove planks or geometric patterns, applied to one wall to give a room texture and a focal point. In a Southwest Florida home, the right choice depends on the room's humidity, the finish you want and whether the wall is painted white or left as stained wood.

## What Are the Main Types of Wood Accent Walls?
True shiplap is milled with an overlapping lip, so each board locks over the one below and hides the fastener line. Nickel-gap boards copy that look with a consistent reveal about the width of a nickel. Tongue-and-groove planks fit tighter and read as a smoother surface. Slat walls use narrow vertical strips spaced over a dark backer or acoustic felt, which suits media rooms and modern entries. Board and batten and picture-frame molding are built from flat stock and trim rather than plank boards, and they pair well with traditional or coastal interiors.

Material matters as much as pattern. Pine and poplar take paint well and are the classic choice. Primed MDF is stable and economical for painted walls in dry rooms but swells if it gets wet. Cedar, white oak and walnut look best stained or oiled. PVC and composite boards cost more but shrug off moisture, so they belong in baths, laundry rooms and covered outdoor areas. Installation means locating studs, adding blocking where needed, acclimating the wood, nailing every board level and caulking or filling before finish.

| Style | Look | Best material | Where it works |
| ----- | ---- | ------------- | -------------- |
| Shiplap | Horizontal boards with shadow line | Pine, poplar or primed MDF | Living rooms, bedrooms, entries |
| Nickel gap | Even narrow reveal between boards | Pine or MDF | Painted feature walls, ceilings |
| Tongue-and-groove | Tight joints, smoother surface | Pine, cedar, white oak | Ceilings, dens, stained walls |
| Vertical slats | Narrow strips over a dark backer | Oak, walnut, veneered panels | Media rooms, offices, modern entries |
| Board and batten | Flat panels with raised battens | MDF or poplar trim | Dining rooms, mudrooms, halls |
| PVC or composite plank | Shiplap look, waterproof | Cellular PVC | Baths, laundry, covered lanais |

## What Works Best in a Florida Home?
Wood moves with moisture, and our air carries plenty of it. Boards should sit inside the air-conditioned house for several days before installation so they adjust to indoor conditions, and every face and edge should be primed or sealed so the wall does not cup or open gaps the first summer the house sits closed up. Exterior block walls in many Southwest Florida homes are furred out with strips, so we plan fastening and blocking around that layer rather than nailing into concrete.

Painted white shiplap reads naturally coastal in Bonita Springs and Naples, but it is not the only option. Stained white oak slats or a cedar tongue-and-groove ceiling over a lanai give warmth without looking themed. In bathrooms and anywhere near salt air, we switch to PVC boards and stainless or coated fasteners so nothing rusts or swells. Seasonal owners should leave the air conditioning running with humidity control while away; that protects the accent wall along with every other piece of millwork in the home, from cabinets to doors and trim.

## Shiplap Wall Questions

### Is shiplap still in style?
Painted farmhouse shiplap on every wall has faded, but wood accent walls have not. Narrow vertical slats, stained oak, nickel-gap ceilings and a single shiplap feature wall behind a bed or fireplace still look current, especially when the board width and finish suit the rest of the house.

### Can shiplap go in a bathroom?
Yes, with the right material. Use PVC or composite boards, or wood that is fully sealed on all sides, and keep it out of the shower spray. A strong exhaust fan matters more than the board itself, because steam that lingers will find any unsealed edge.

### What is the difference between shiplap and a wood accent wall?
Shiplap is one specific board profile with an overlapping edge. A wood accent wall is any feature wall finished in wood, including shiplap, slats, tongue-and-groove, board and batten or geometric patterns. Shiplap is simply the most searched version of the idea.
