The short answer
Good laundry room shelving combines three things: closed cabinets or deep shelves for detergent and supplies, a rod or pull-out rack for hang-drying, and a folding counter, usually set over front-load machines. Shelves for supplies work at about 12 inches deep, while a counter over machines needs about 24 inches plus a gap for vibration. In a humid Florida laundry room, choose plywood or sealed cabinet boxes and stainless or solid hardware rather than raw particleboard or bare wire.

## What Shelving Belongs in a Laundry Room?
Start with the machines. Front-load washers and dryers let a counter run across the top, which turns the room into a folding station and adds a full shelf of storage above. Top-load washers need clear space above the lid, so shelving starts higher and a separate folding counter goes beside them. Wall cabinets with doors keep detergent and cleaners out of sight and away from children, while open shelves or cubbies hold baskets that are grabbed every day.

Hanging space is the piece most builder laundries forget. A rod under a cabinet or between two side panels lets shirts go straight from the dryer to hangers, and a pull-out or fold-down drying rack handles swimsuits and delicates. Tall pantry-style cabinets can hold an ironing board, vacuum and mop. Material choice sets the price: wire shelving is cheapest, melamine and laminate cabinets cost more, and painted plywood with quartz counters sits at the top. ## What Changes in a Florida Laundry Room?
Moisture is the constant problem. A dryer vent with a loose connection, a wet towel load left overnight or a closed room in August all push humidity up, and raw particleboard swells at the edges when it gets damp. ## Laundry Shelving Questions

### How high should shelves be above a washer and dryer?
With front-load machines, a counter usually sits just above the machines with a small gap so vibration does not knock it, and the first shelf or cabinet goes about 18 inches above the counter. With a top-loader, keep shelves high enough that the lid opens fully and you can load clothes comfortably.

### Is wire shelving okay in a laundry room?
It is inexpensive and lets air circulate, but small items tip through, it leaves marks on folded clothes and in coastal homes it can rust. Solid shelves or cabinets look better and hold up longer, especially with sealed edges and stainless hardware.

### Can I put a counter over my washer and dryer?
Yes, if they are front-loading. The counter needs support on the walls or side panels rather than resting on the machines, and enough clearance to slide the units out for service. Quartz or laminate both work; quartz handles wet laundry and detergent better.
