The short answer
A freestanding tub is a soaking tub finished on all sides that stands on its own instead of being built into a deck or alcove. Popular ideas include placing it under a window, centering it on a stone or tile feature wall, or setting it in a wet room behind glass with the shower. Installing one well means planning the drain location in the floor, choosing a wall, deck or floor-mounted filler, checking that the floor can carry the filled weight and leaving room around it to clean.

## What Does Freestanding Tub Installation Involve?
The drain comes first. Unlike an alcove tub, a freestanding tub drains straight down through the floor at a fixed point, so the drain has to be placed exactly where the tub will sit. On a concrete slab, moving it means cutting and trenching the floor. The filler is the next decision. A floor-mounted tub filler needs supply lines brought up through the floor, a wall-mounted spout needs the tub close to a wall, and some tubs accept a faucet mounted on the rim.

Materials change weight and feel. Acrylic and stone resin composite tubs are the most common; acrylic is light, while stone resin is heavier and holds heat well. Cast iron and solid stone tubs are the heaviest of all, and once filled with water and a bather they can weigh well over half a ton. A typical soaking tub holds roughly 50 to 80 gallons, so the water heater must be large enough to fill it. Leave several inches around the tub for cleaning, and more on the side where you step in.

## How Do Florida Homes Handle a Freestanding Tub?
Most single-story homes here sit on slab-on-grade, which carries even a heavy stone tub with no trouble but makes relocating a drain a concrete job. Many Southwest Florida master baths still have a dated drop-in tub under a window, and placing a freestanding tub in that same spot keeps plumbing changes smaller. In mid-rise and high-rise condos, a heavy tub may need an engineer's review, and the association typically has to approve plumbing changes.

Humidity is the other factor. A soaking tub releases a lot of warm moisture, so the exhaust fan has to be sized for the room and vented outside, never into the attic. If you are replacing a tub with a large shower and still want to soak, a wet-room layout places the freestanding tub inside the glass enclosure so splashes stay contained. For homes used seasonally, choose a filler and drain that are easy to inspect, and run the water for a few minutes before the first soak after months away. Wall-mounted fillers have fewer exposed parts on the floor to clean around.

## Freestanding Tub Questions

### How much space do you need around a freestanding tub?
Leave at least several inches between the tub and any wall so you can clean behind it, and more room on the entry side so you can step in and out comfortably. In practice, the space should be noticeably wider and longer than the tub itself so it does not look squeezed in.

### Do freestanding tubs need a special drain?
They use a standard tub drain, but it sits in the floor directly under the tub's drain outlet rather than at a wall. That means the drain has to be placed precisely, and on a slab it may need to be moved by cutting the concrete. We locate it from the tub's spec sheet.

### Is a floor-mounted tub filler worth it?
It makes sense when the tub sits away from walls, such as in the middle of the room or under a wide window. It needs supply lines through the floor and a rough-in valve set before tile. If the tub is near a wall, a wall-mounted filler is simpler to service.
