The short answer
A wood beam ceiling adds exposed beams across a flat, tray or vaulted ceiling for warmth and scale. Most homes use decorative beams, which are not structural: either hollow box beams built from real wood boards or lightweight faux beams molded from high-density polyurethane. Solid timber beams look the most authentic but are heavy and need support planned into the framing. Cost depends on beam size, span, species and finish, and how much of the ceiling the layout covers.

## What Are the Options for Ceiling Beams?
Hollow box beams are the most common choice. A carpenter builds a three-sided box from boards of cypress, white oak, pine or reclaimed lumber, then slides it over a wood cleat screwed into the ceiling framing. The result looks solid, weighs a fraction of a timber and can hide wiring for pendants or recessed lights. Faux beams molded from polyurethane go up the same way, accept stain or paint, and are the lightest option, though up close they read as manufactured to some eyes.

Solid timber beams carry real weight, often hundreds of pounds per beam, so they must bear on walls or be hung from framing an engineer has checked. They suit new vaulted additions more than retrofits. Layout matters as much as material: parallel beams along a vault, a grid that creates a coffered look, or a single ridge beam with smaller rafters. Finishes run from wire-brushed and stained to hand-hewn, whitewashed or painted to match trim. Pecky cypress remains a Florida favorite for its character, with pockets and channels that no faux product fully copies.

| Type | Weight | Look | Best use |
| ---- | ------ | ---- | -------- |
| Solid timber | Very heavy, needs structural support | Most authentic, visible checks and grain | New additions, structural ridge beams |
| Hollow box beam (real wood) | Light to moderate | Real wood faces, convincing up close | Retrofits on flat, tray or vaulted ceilings |
| Reclaimed wood box beam | Light to moderate | Weathered texture, nail holes, patina | Rustic, farmhouse or coastal rooms |
| Polyurethane faux beam | Very light | Molded grain, stain or paint | Budget projects, damp or high-humidity spaces |
| Painted MDF or poplar | Light | Smooth, painted to match trim | Coffered grids and transitional interiors |

## What Changes for Beams in Southwest Florida?
Many homes here have vaulted great rooms facing the lanai, which makes them ideal for beams, but the roof trusses above usually were not designed to carry extra load. That is the main reason we build hollow beams for retrofits: they attach to the truss chords with minimal weight. Before adding anything heavy, the truss layout and any manufacturer limits get checked. Wood should be acclimated inside the air-conditioned house before installation, since our humidity can cause boards to move if they go straight from a truck to the ceiling.

Termites are a real concern in this climate, so we use kiln-dried or treated material, naturally resistant species such as cypress where it fits the design, and seal every face. Beams on a covered lanai need exterior-grade material or polyurethane, stainless fasteners and a finish rated for sun and salt air. Wiring added for lights inside a beam requires a licensed electrician and may need a permit. Condo owners should check the association's rules before fastening anything into a concrete ceiling.

## Wood Beam Ceiling Questions

### Are faux wood beams worth it?
For most retrofits, yes. Polyurethane and hollow wood beams give the look of timber at a fraction of the weight, go up faster and can hide wiring. Hollow beams built from real boards look the most convincing at close range, while polyurethane suits damp areas and tighter budgets.

### Can you add wood beams to a flat ceiling?
Yes. On a flat ceiling, beams usually run across the short dimension of the room or form a grid for a coffered look. With ceilings around eight feet, smaller beams keep the room from feeling low, so we size them in the 3D render first.

### How are decorative ceiling beams attached?
A wood cleat is screwed into the ceiling joists or trusses, and the hollow beam slides over it and is fastened through the sides. Faux polyurethane beams use the same method plus construction adhesive. Solid timbers need structural brackets or bearing points.
