The short answer
A wet bar is a bar area with running water: a small sink, a drain and usually an undercounter refrigerator, ice maker or both. Installing one means bringing a water line and a vented drain to the spot, adding dedicated circuits for the appliances, then building cabinets and a stone or quartz counter. The biggest cost factor is distance from existing plumbing, because in a slab-on-grade Florida home a new drain often means cutting and trenching the concrete floor.

## What Goes Into a Wet Bar Installation?
The sink is what separates a wet bar from a dry bar, and it drives most of the work. The drain needs proper slope and venting, which a plumber may handle with a vent tied into the existing system or, where code allows, an air admittance valve. Ice makers need their own water line and either a gravity drain or a drain pump. Each refrigerated appliance should sit on a dedicated circuit, and outlets near the sink need GFCI protection. Placing the bar on the back side of a kitchen or bathroom wall shortens every run.

Cabinetry and the counter define how the bar looks and works. A compact bar fits in about six to eight feet of wall: a bar sink, a 24-inch beverage refrigerator, a 15-inch ice maker and drawers for glassware and tools. Larger bars add a second refrigerator, a dishwasher drawer, open shelving or glass-front uppers with LED lighting. Quartz, quartzite and granite are common counters because they handle spills from citrus and wine, while marble looks beautiful but etches. A raised counter at 42 inches with stools turns a wall unit into a gathering spot.

## Where Does a Wet Bar Fit in a Florida Floor Plan?
Southwest Florida homes are built for entertaining that spills outdoors, so the best wet bar spots usually sit between the great room and the lanai doors, or off the dining room where a server can reach the kitchen. Hallway niches, a closet beside the family room and part of a bonus room are other good candidates. Because most homes here are single-story block on a concrete slab, we check where the nearest drain line runs before committing to a location; a spot ten feet from plumbing can cost far less than one across the house.

Condos add their own rules. Associations in Bonita Springs and Naples often require approval for any new plumbing, and some limit where drains can tie into building stacks or whether the slab may be cored. Permits apply in single-family homes too, since new plumbing and electrical work needs them in the City of Bonita Springs, Lee County and Collier County alike. ## Wet Bar Questions

### What is the difference between a wet bar and a dry bar?
A wet bar has a sink with running water and a drain; a dry bar does not. Dry bars are simpler to build because they need only cabinets, a counter and power for a refrigerator, while a wet bar requires a plumber, a vented drain and usually a permit.

### Can a wet bar be added to a home on a concrete slab?
Yes, it just takes more work. The plumber saw-cuts and trenches the slab to run the drain to an existing line at the correct slope, then the floor is patched and refinished. Placing the bar near a kitchen, laundry or bathroom wall shortens that trench and lowers the cost.

### Does an ice maker need a drain?
Most undercounter ice makers, especially clear-ice models, need a drain because melt water has to go somewhere. If the unit sits below the available drain line, a model with a built-in drain pump solves it. We confirm the drain path and water supply before ordering appliances so the cabinet opening fits.
