The short answer
A walk-in humidor is a small, sealed room lined with Spanish cedar that holds cigars at a steady humidity of about 65 to 70 percent and a temperature near 65 to 70°F. It needs insulated walls with a vapor barrier, a tightly sealed glass door, an active humidification system with its own controller, and usually dedicated cooling. Shelving, drawers and display boxes are built from Spanish cedar. In a cigar lounge, the humidor is typically a glass-fronted room off the main space.

## How Is a Walk-In Humidor Built?
The shell comes first. Walls and ceiling are framed and insulated, a vapor barrier goes on the warm side, and the interior is lined with tongue-and-groove Spanish cedar, which handles humidity well, resists tobacco beetles and has a pleasant aroma. The floor is often tile or stone for durability. A glass door with full perimeter gaskets keeps conditioned air inside while letting guests see the collection. Lighting should be low-heat LED so it does not warm the room or dry the cigars.

Climate control is the real engine. An active humidifier with a digital controller adds moisture when levels drop, and a dedicated cooling unit, often a ductless mini-split or a purpose-built cellar system, holds temperature steady without drying the air the way a whole-house system can. A small fan circulates air so there are no dead spots. Inside, a mix of open shelves for boxes, sliding trays for singles and locking lockers for guests or members gives flexibility. Sensors with remote alerts let owners check conditions from a phone.

| Component | Typical approach | Purpose |
| --------- | ---------------- | ------- |
| Lining | Tongue-and-groove Spanish cedar | Buffers humidity, resists pests, adds aroma |
| Walls | Insulation plus vapor barrier | Stops moisture moving into wall cavities |
| Door | Insulated glass with full gaskets | Seals the room while showing the collection |
| Humidity | Active humidifier and controller, about 65–70% | Keeps cigars from drying or swelling |
| Temperature | Dedicated cooling, about 65–70°F | Prevents beetle hatching and mold |
| Monitoring | Digital sensors with remote alerts | Warns of failures while away |

## What Changes in a Southwest Florida Home?
Florida's outdoor air is humid most of the year, but inside an air-conditioned home the air is often drier than a humidor needs, and the cigar room around it may run warmer when the lounge is in use. That is why the humidor should be its own controlled space rather than relying on the house system. Temperature is the bigger danger here. Above the mid-70s, tobacco beetle eggs can hatch, so dedicated cooling that keeps running during summer heat is worth the investment.

Hurricane season brings power outages, and a humidor that loses cooling and humidity control for several days can damage a valuable collection. Connecting the cooling unit, controller and sensors to a standby generator circuit is a common choice for serious collectors. Seasonal owners rely on remote monitoring to catch problems while they are away. The cooling unit, new circuits and any ductwork are permitted work, and condo associations will want to review mechanical changes and smoke ventilation. Our cigar and whiskey room packages start from $18,000, with the humidor planned as part of the lounge.

## Walk-In Humidor Questions

### What humidity and temperature should a walk-in humidor hold?
Most collectors aim for about 65 to 70 percent relative humidity and roughly 65 to 70°F. Many prefer the lower end for long-term aging. The key is stability, so an active humidifier with a controller and dedicated cooling matter more than the exact number.

### Why is Spanish cedar used in humidors?
Spanish cedar absorbs and releases moisture slowly, which helps buffer humidity swings. It also resists tobacco beetles and mold and carries an aroma many smokers enjoy. It is lighter and milder than the aromatic cedar used in closets, which would overpower cigars.

### Can a closet be turned into a walk-in humidor?
Often, yes. A closet off a den or cigar lounge can be insulated, sealed with a vapor barrier, lined with Spanish cedar and fitted with a glass door, humidifier and cooling. We check wall space, electrical access and a path for the cooling unit during the free LiDAR scan.
