The short answer
A walk-in closet works when the layout fits the wardrobe and the room. Hanging space is about 24 inches deep, and you want at least a 36-inch aisle, so hanging on one side needs roughly 5 feet of width and hanging on both sides needs about 7 feet. A center island takes a room closer to 12 feet wide. From there, good design is the mix: long hang, double hang, drawers, shoe shelves, a full-length mirror and lighting that shows true color.

## How Do You Design a Primary Walk-In Closet?
We start with an inventory rather than a drawing. Counting dresses and long coats, shirts and trousers, folded knits, shoes and handbags tells us how many feet of long hang, double hang, shelving and drawers the room actually needs. Double hanging fits two rows of shirts and pants in one wall section, so it is the most space-efficient choice, while long hang is saved for the pieces that need it. Drawers with dividers handle jewelry, watches and accessories, and pull-out hampers, valet rods and a hidden safe are easy to add at the design stage.

Finish choices set the feel. Painted cabinetry and melamine are durable and clean; wood veneers and glass-front doors move the room toward a boutique look. Lighting matters more here than almost anywhere in the house: LED strips built into the rods and shelves, plus warm ambient light, let you see navy against black. A shared primary closet can be split by side or zoned by type, and a bench or vanity turns a storage room into a dressing room.

## What Changes in a Florida Closet?
Humidity is the quiet threat to leather, silk and wool. A closed closet without conditioned air turns musty within a season, so we make sure the room has an air-conditioning supply and a path for return air, through a return grille or a gap under the door, and we choose stable finishes rather than sealing the room like a storage unit. LED lighting also matters here because it adds very little heat. Homes near Bonita Beach and Fort Myers Beach get hardware specified to resist salt air.

Southwest Florida wardrobes are also bigger than they look. Many owners keep a season of linen and golf clothes, a travel wardrobe for trips north and gala pieces, which means more hanging space and dedicated luggage storage up high. Turning a spare bedroom into a dressing room is common here, and adding lighting, outlets or a door change usually needs an electrical permit. In a condo, cabinetry deliveries are planned around elevator reservations and association work hours. Built-in hampers and a folding surface also help during guest season.

### How big should a primary walk-in closet be?
For hanging on both sides with a comfortable aisle, plan on at least 7 feet wide and as long as the wardrobe requires. Shared primary closets with an island, a vanity or seating need much more room, often a converted bedroom. The right size comes from counting what you own, then designing around it.

### What is the best lighting for a walk-in closet?
Layered LED lighting. Strips built into hanging rods and shelf fronts light the clothes directly, a ceiling fixture provides general light, and a well-lit mirror helps with dressing. Choose LEDs with a high color rendering rating so dark colors look accurate. Motion or door switches are handy in the main closet.

### Is a closet island worth it?
In a room wide enough for 36-inch aisles on every side, yes. An island adds drawers for accessories and folded items, a surface for packing, and a natural place for jewelry storage. In a narrower closet, the same money usually buys more on the walls, such as drawers, shoe shelving or extra hanging.
