The short answer
An under-stair wine cellar or wine closet turns a small, unused space into a climate-controlled room for bottles. A true cellar holds wine around 55°F at moderate humidity, which requires full insulation, a vapor barrier, a sealed door and a cooling unit designed for wine. Glass fronts show off the collection but must be insulated glazing. Capacity depends on the space and racking, from a few dozen bottles in a closet to several hundred under a large staircase.

## How Is a Small Wine Room Built?
The space is treated like a small refrigerator. Walls and ceiling are framed or furred out and filled with insulation, with a vapor barrier on the warm side of the assembly, which in Florida is usually the outside of the cellar. The door must be exterior-grade or insulated glass with weatherstripping and a threshold seal. Cooling comes from a through-wall unit, a ducted split system or a fully ducted unit, sized to the room volume, the amount of glass and the heat of the surrounding space.

Through-wall units are the simplest, but they need to vent heat into a space that can absorb it, such as a large room or garage, and they produce some noise. Ducted and split systems move the condenser elsewhere and are quieter, at a higher cost. Racking is designed around the staircase angle, with stepped columns, label-forward display rows and diamond bins for bulk storage. LED lighting runs cool and does not heat bottles. Under a staircase, every inch counts, so custom racking is usually the right choice.

| Element | Common choice | Why it matters |
| ------- | ------------- | -------------- |
| Temperature | About 55°F | Standard long-term storage target |
| Humidity | Moderate, roughly 50–70% | Keeps corks from drying without mold |
| Insulation | Insulated walls and ceiling with vapor barrier | Stops condensation and heat gain |
| Door | Insulated glass or solid exterior-grade, sealed | Keeps cool air in |
| Cooling | Through-wall, split or ducted unit | Sized to volume, glass and surroundings |
| Racking | Custom to the stair angle | Maximizes bottles in odd shapes |
| Lighting | LED | Low heat near bottles |

## What Makes Florida Cellars Harder to Build?
Southwest Florida reverses the usual cellar problem. Outside the cellar, the air is warm and humid much of the year, so moisture tries to push into the cool room. That is why the vapor barrier goes on the outside of the insulation, why every gap must be sealed, and why glass fronts need insulated, often double or triple pane, units to avoid sweating. Cooling systems also face long summers, and owners should plan for power interruptions after storms.

Many local homes have stairs set on slab-on-grade block construction, and the space underneath may house plumbing, electrical panels or ducts that must be relocated. Seasonal owners need reliable cooling and monitoring while they are away, with alarms or remote sensors if possible. Condo owners should confirm association rules for added units and venting. Our wine display packages start from $12,500, and a closet or under-stair cellar is one of the most popular ways to start a collection. Smart sensors that send temperature alerts to your phone are an inexpensive add that seasonal owners appreciate.

## Under-Stair Wine Cellar Questions

### How many bottles fit under a staircase?
It depends on the stair width, height and depth. A small closet might hold a few dozen bottles, while a full under-stair cellar can hold a few hundred with custom racking. We scan the space with LiDAR and show the racking layout and bottle count in a 3D render.

### Do I need a cooling unit for a wine closet?
For long-term storage at around 55°F, yes. A regular closet in an air-conditioned Florida home stays warmer than wine needs and fluctuates. A wine cooling unit, insulation and a sealed door keep the temperature and humidity stable.

### Can I have a glass front on a small wine cellar?
Yes, but it must be insulated glazing with sealed edges, and the cooling unit must be sized for the extra heat load. Single-pane glass will sweat in Florida humidity. We specify the glass and cooling together so the display stays clear.

## Why Collectors Work With Cutting Edge
In Florida, a wine cellar is only as good as its vapor barrier and cooling. Cutting Edge Kitchen & Bath builds small cellars and wine closets with insulation, sealing and climate control designed for this climate first, then adds racking and glass that make the collection a feature. Licensed as a Florida general contractor, we have finished more than 500 remodels across Southwest Florida, earned nine Best of Houzz awards and run a 4,000-square-foot showroom at 28280 Old 41 Road in Bonita Springs. A free LiDAR scan and 3D render come first, then one fixed price.
