The short answer
A stone fireplace surround can be built three ways: full natural stone set on a structural base, thin stone or manufactured veneer adhered to the wall, or large-format stone panels. Stacked stone gives a rugged, textured look; slab and panel surrounds feel cleaner and more modern. In Southwest Florida, most fireplaces are electric or gas units in a great room or family room, which makes refacing practical. A new surround can usually go over the existing wall without demolishing the firebox.

## Which Stone Fireplace Style Suits Your Room?
Stacked stone, sometimes called ledgestone, uses narrow strips of stone set in interlocking panels to create a deep, shadowed texture. It suits coastal, Mediterranean and transitional homes and usually runs floor to ceiling for drama. Natural thin veneer is real stone cut to about an inch thick, so it adds texture without the weight of full stone. Manufactured veneer is cast concrete colored to look like stone, lighter and less expensive, though it can look repetitive up close.

For a cleaner look, large slabs of marble, quartzite or porcelain can wrap the opening with few seams. Designer Stone Panels take that idea further: natural onyx, marble and quartzite only 8mm thin, with optional LED backlighting that makes translucent stone glow. Because they are light, they can face an existing wall or a linear electric fireplace without new footings. Whatever the material, the area nearest the firebox must follow the appliance manufacturer's clearance rules, and heavier stone needs a wall built to carry it, with lath, a scratch coat and approved fasteners.

| Option | Look | Weight and install |
| ------ | ---- | ------------------ |
| Full natural stone | Deep, rustic, irregular | Heavy; may need a footing or ledge for support |
| Natural thin veneer | Real stone texture | About 1 in thick; adhered over lath and mortar |
| Manufactured veneer | Stone look, more uniform | Light; adhered over lath and mortar |
| Stacked stone panels | Layered ledgestone texture | Interlocking panels set with mortar or adhesive |
| Stone or porcelain slab | Clean, modern, few seams | Large pieces set on a prepared wall |
| Designer Stone Panels | Translucent onyx or marble, optionally backlit | 8mm thin panels over an existing wall, interior only |

## What Changes in a Florida Home?
Few Southwest Florida homes burn wood, so the typical project is a linear electric fireplace or a gas insert set into a TV wall or a feature wall in the great room. That changes the design priorities. Heat output is modest, so the surround is mostly about style, the TV height above it, and how the stone meets built-in cabinets on each side. Electric units need a nearby outlet or dedicated circuit, and gas units need a licensed gas line and venting, both of which are permitted work.

Block-wall construction helps here, since concrete masonry gives stone a solid backing on exterior walls, while interior frame walls may need added blocking for heavy material. Designer Stone Panels are an interior product, so a fireplace on an open lanai calls for dense natural stone instead. Condo owners should expect association approval before adding weight to a wall or running new gas. As the Florida exclusive distributor of Designer Stone Panels, we can show backlit samples in our Bonita Springs showroom.

## Stone Fireplace Questions

### Can you put stone over an existing fireplace?
Usually, yes. Thin veneer, stacked stone panels and lightweight stone panels can go over an existing drywall or masonry surround once the surface is prepared. We check the wall's condition, the appliance clearances and how the new thickness meets the hearth and mantel before recommending a material.

### What is the difference between stacked stone and stone veneer?
Stacked stone describes a style: narrow pieces layered to create texture. Stone veneer describes how it is made: real or manufactured stone cut thin to adhere to a wall. Many stacked stone fireplaces are actually built from veneer panels, which keeps the weight manageable.

### Is stone safe around an electric fireplace?
Stone is noncombustible, which makes it a good surround material. Electric fireplaces still have manufacturer requirements for clearances, ventilation and any materials above the unit, so follow the installation manual. Backlit panels need their LED drivers placed where heat will not shorten their life.
