The short answer
A sauna uses dry heat, usually 150 to 195°F at low humidity, so it feels intense but dry. A steam room runs much cooler, around 110 to 120°F, but at close to 100 percent humidity, so it feels wet and enveloping. In a Southwest Florida home, steam is almost always built into the primary shower as a sealed enclosure with a generator, while a sauna is its own small wood-lined room, traditional or infrared. If you have the space, many owners build both side by side.

## How Do a Steam Room and a Sauna Differ?
The difference starts with what heats the room. A sauna heater warms the air and the wood around you, either with electric rocks you can splash with water or with infrared panels that warm your body directly at a lower air temperature. A steam room pumps vapor from a generator into a fully sealed space until the air is saturated. That is why a steam room feels hotter than its thermometer reads, and why a sauna can sit at 180°F and still be comfortable for a short session.

The construction is just as different. A steam shower is a wet room: every surface is tile or stone over a continuous waterproofing membrane, the ceiling slopes so condensation runs to the wall instead of dripping, and the glass door seals top to bottom. A sauna is a dry room: tongue-and-groove cedar, hemlock or aspen over insulation and a foil vapor barrier, a wood bench, a solid or glass door, and a heater sized to the cubic footage.

| | Steam room | Sauna |
| --- | ---------- | ----- |
| Heat | Vapor from a steam generator | Electric heater with rocks, or infrared panels |
| Typical temperature | 110–120°F | 150–195°F (infrared runs lower, 120–150°F) |
| Humidity | Near 100% | Low, rising briefly when water hits the rocks |
| Materials | Tile or stone over full waterproofing, sloped ceiling | Cedar, hemlock or aspen over insulation and vapor barrier |
| Utilities | Water supply, drain, dedicated circuit for the generator | Dedicated circuit, often 240V for traditional heaters |
| Usual location | Primary shower converted to a steam enclosure | Spare room, closet, bath alcove or prefab cabin |
| Space | An existing shower footprint can often work | About 4×4 ft for one or two people, larger for benches |

## Which Works Better in a Florida Home?
Climate changes the answer here. Southwest Florida air is already humid most of the year, so a steam room has to be a completely sealed box: vapor that escapes into a wall cavity or attic turns into mold within a season. We build steam enclosures with a full membrane under the tile, a sloped ceiling, a sealed door and an exhaust fan that clears the room after each session. Done that way, steam fits naturally into the primary bath you already use every morning.

Saunas are more forgiving because they are dry rooms, but they still belong inside the air-conditioned house rather than in a garage or on the lanai, unless the unit is built for outdoor use. Cedar and hemlock handle our humidity well. Condo owners in Bonita Springs and Naples should expect association approval for the electrical work and any change to plumbing or exhaust. If you play golf or tennis in the heat, a sauna or steam room close to the bedroom becomes a daily habit rather than an occasional treat.

## Steam Room vs Sauna Questions

### Can I turn my existing shower into a steam shower?
Often, yes. The shower needs to be enclosed to the ceiling with a sealed glass door, the ceiling should slope, the waterproofing must be steam-rated, and you need room nearby for the generator, usually in a vanity, closet or attic within the manufacturer's distance limit. We confirm all of that during the free LiDAR scan.

### Do I need a 240V circuit for a home sauna?
Most traditional sauna heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit. Many smaller infrared saunas run on 120V, but larger infrared rooms can also need 240V. Either way it should be a dedicated circuit installed and permitted by a licensed electrician.

### Is it worth building both?
If you have the space, yes. A steam shower and a small sauna next to each other share the same plumbing and electrical planning, and building them in one project costs less than adding the second room later.
