The short answer
Most small bathrooms use one of three layouts: all fixtures on one wall, fixtures on two facing walls, or the classic three-wall alcove with a tub or shower across the back. In a 5 by 8 bath, the alcove plan is the most efficient. Building codes require at least 15 inches from the toilet's center to a side wall and 21 inches of clear space in front. Pocket doors, wall-hung toilets and shallow vanities buy back the inches that make a tight room comfortable.

## Which Layout Fits a Small Bathroom Best?
A one-wall layout puts the vanity, toilet and shower in a row, which keeps plumbing in a single wall and works in long, narrow rooms. A two-wall layout splits fixtures across facing walls and suits rooms around 6 feet wide. The three-wall alcove is the standard 5 by 7 or 5 by 8 plan: a 60-inch tub or shower fills the back wall, with the toilet and vanity side by side along one long wall. Swapping that tub for a walk-in shower is the most common small bath upgrade because it keeps the footprint and drains roughly in place.

Small changes add up. A pocket or barn door removes the 30-inch arc a swinging door needs. A wall-hung toilet with an in-wall tank frees a few inches of depth and makes cleaning easier, though it needs a deeper wall for the carrier. An 18-inch-deep vanity instead of the standard 21 gives back walking space, and a corner sink can rescue a powder room. Moving the toilet or shower drain costs more than keeping them, so the best layouts usually work with the existing plumbing.

| Room size | Common layout | What fits |
| --------- | ------------- | --------- |
| 5 x 7 ft | Three-wall alcove | 60 in tub or shower, toilet, 24 to 30 in vanity |
| 5 x 8 ft | Three-wall alcove | 60 in shower, toilet, 30 to 36 in vanity |
| 5 x 9 ft | Alcove with longer vanity wall | 60 in shower, toilet, 36 to 48 in vanity or linen tower |
| 6 x 8 ft | Two-wall | Shower on one side, toilet and vanity on the other |
| 6 x 9 ft | Two-wall or walk-in | Larger walk-in shower or double vanity |
| Code clearances | All layouts | 15 in toilet center to side wall, 21 in clear in front |

## What Changes in Southwest Florida Homes?
Many baths here were built as part of the same tract plans in the 1990s and 2000s, so we see a lot of 5 by 8 guest baths and pool baths with an exterior door to the lanai. A pool bath works harder than it looks: wet feet, sand and chlorine call for slip-resistant porcelain floors, a shower big enough to rinse off after a swim, and a layout that keeps the door clear of the toilet. Slab-on-grade construction means moving a drain involves cutting concrete, which is why keeping fixtures in place saves real money.

Condo baths bring their own limits. Plumbing stacks are shared, floors are often post-tensioned slabs that cannot be cut, and associations usually want plumbing changes reviewed before work starts. That pushes condo layouts toward reusing existing drain locations. Humidity matters everywhere: a small room with a shower fills with vapor fast, so an exhaust fan sized to the room and ducted outdoors is part of the layout, not an afterthought. Seasonal residents also benefit from finishes that dry quickly and do not hold mildew.

## Small Bathroom Layout Questions

### What is the minimum size for a bathroom with a shower?
A full bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink can fit in about 5 by 7 feet, though 5 by 8 is more comfortable. A three-quarter bath with a 36-inch shower can be smaller. Code clearances for the toilet and a minimum shower interior of 30 by 30 inches set the limits.

### Is a wall-hung toilet worth it in a small bathroom?
It saves a few inches of depth, makes the floor easier to clean and gives a modern look. It needs an in-wall carrier and tank, which usually means a deeper wall, and the cost is higher than a standard toilet. In very tight rooms the extra inches can be worth it.

### Can I move the toilet in a small bathroom?
Yes, but on a concrete slab it means cutting the floor and rerouting the drain, which adds cost. In condos it may not be allowed because of shared stacks and post-tensioned slabs. Most efficient layouts keep the toilet near its current location.
