The short answer
A shower niche is a recessed shelf built into the wall between studs, so shampoo and soap sit flush instead of on a hanging caddy. The best spot is an interior wall, out of the direct spray, roughly 48 to 60 inches off the floor. Common sizes are 12 by 12 or 12 by 24 inches, about 3.5 inches deep in a standard stud wall. What makes a niche last is waterproofing that wraps every inside surface and a sill sloped back toward the shower.

## Where Should a Shower Niche Go and How Big?
Placement comes first. A niche needs an empty stud bay, so we plan it before framing is closed and keep it away from the valve wall when plumbing runs through that cavity. The wall you see when you step in, opposite the showerhead or beside it, usually works best because bottles stay in reach without collecting constant spray. Tall households often prefer the top shelf around chest height; a lower second niche at about knee height makes shaving legs easier and keeps a bench area tidy.

Size follows the tile. A niche that lines up with grout joints on all four sides looks deliberate, so we lay out the tile first and then frame the opening to match. Horizontal niches suit long walls and hold several bottles in a row. Vertical niches with a glass or stone shelf fit narrow walls. Framing options include a mitered tile edge, a metal profile trim, or a solid stone sill and header cut from the same slab as the bench. The back can match the walls or use a contrast mosaic to read as a feature.

| Option | Typical size | Best for | Notes |
| ------ | ------------ | -------- | ----- |
| Single horizontal | 12 × 24 in | Most walk-in showers | Holds four to six bottles in a row |
| Square | 12 × 12 or 16 × 16 in | Small showers, tub surrounds | Fits between studs without extra framing |
| Vertical with shelf | 12 × 36 in or taller | Narrow walls, shared showers | Glass or stone shelf splits the height |
| Double stacked | Two 12 × 24 in openings | Two-person primary showers | Upper for adults, lower for shaving or kids |
| Full-width ledge | Wall-to-wall, 4–6 in tall | Modern, minimal designs | Needs a wall without plumbing or wiring in it |

## Why Do Exterior Walls Cause Problems Here?
Most Southwest Florida homes have exterior walls of concrete block with furring strips and drywall on the inside, so there is almost no cavity to recess into. Cutting deep into block weakens a wall that is part of the home's wind-resistance design, and a thin furred niche leaves bottles barely set back. Even in frame construction, an exterior niche replaces insulation with a cold pocket that can collect condensation against the warm, humid outdoor air. For both reasons we place niches on interior partition walls whenever the layout allows.

Waterproofing is the other half. We treat the niche as part of the shower pan, wrapping a bonded membrane or liquid-applied system into every corner and sloping the bottom sill toward the drain so water never sits against the back. Preformed foam niches help keep corners true. In a climate where bathroom air rarely dries out completely, a niche that holds water will grow mold in its grout within months, so getting this detail right is what keeps the shower clean for years.

## Shower Niche Questions

### How deep is a standard shower niche?
In a 2×4 stud wall a niche is usually about 3.5 inches deep before tile, which still fits most shampoo bottles. A 2×6 wall allows closer to 5.5 inches. Tile and setting material on the back take away roughly half an inch, so plan around that when choosing bottle sizes.

### Can you add a niche to an existing shower?
Only by opening the wall, which means removing tile and the waterproofing behind it in that area. Patching new waterproofing into an old system is risky, so a niche is usually added during a full shower rebuild rather than as a stand-alone repair.

### Should a shower niche have a tile or stone shelf?
A solid stone sill is the most durable choice because it has no grout lines on the surface where water sits. Tiled sills work well too when they slope toward the shower and the corners are fully waterproofed. Glass shelves suit vertical niches but need occasional cleaning.

## Built Behind the Tile by Cutting Edge
A niche looks like a small detail, but it is one of the spots where showers fail first. Cutting Edge Kitchen & Bath plans each opening in the 3D render, so tile joints line up before anyone cuts a stud. Our crews flood-test every pan before tile goes on. We are a licensed Florida general contractor based in Bonita Springs with more than 500 Southwest Florida remodels, nine Best of Houzz awards and a 4,000-square-foot showroom on Old 41 Road where you can see stone sills and trim profiles in person.
