The short answer
The best outdoor kitchen ideas for a Southwest Florida home start with location: under the lanai roof, beside the pool, or on an open deck. From there, pick a layout (straight run, L-shape or island with seating), then the cooking core, usually a built-in gas grill plus a side burner, refrigerator and sink. Finish it with materials that shrug off sun, salt and rain, such as stainless or powder-coated cabinets, granite or quartzite tops and porcelain tile, plus a vent hood if the grill sits under a roof.

## Which Outdoor Kitchen Layout Fits Your Space?
A straight run along the house wall is the simplest plan and works on narrow lanais, since it keeps the cook close to the indoor kitchen and the plumbing short. An L-shape adds a corner for prep and a natural spot for a bar-height counter. A freestanding island with stools on the far side is the entertaining favorite, because guests face the cook and the pool at the same time. Larger decks sometimes get a U-shape, or two separate stations: one for the grill and one for a bar with ice maker and beverage fridge.

Appliances drive both the budget and the utility work. A grill needs a natural gas line or a propane tank location, a sink needs supply and a drain, and refrigeration needs dedicated GFCI outlets. Popular additions include a flat-top griddle, a smoker or kamado, a pizza oven, warming drawers and an outdoor-rated TV. Counters, cabinets and the base structure matter as much as the grill. Masonry or steel-stud frames clad in stone, tile or stucco hold up far longer outdoors than wood framing.

| Element | Good choices outdoors | What to avoid |
| ------- | --------------------- | ------------- |
| Base structure | Concrete block or galvanized steel studs with cement board | Wood framing, which rots and attracts termites |
| Cabinets | 304 or 316 stainless, powder-coated aluminum, marine-grade polymer | Indoor plywood or MDF boxes |
| Countertops | Granite, quartzite, porcelain slab, sealed concrete | Most quartz, which can discolor in direct sun |
| Flooring | Textured porcelain pavers, travertine, brushed concrete | Polished stone that turns slick when wet |
| Ventilation | Outdoor-rated hood vented through the roof when under cover | Grilling under a low ceiling with no hood |
| Lighting | Wet-rated LED task lights and under-counter strips | Indoor fixtures that corrode |

## What Holds Up on a Florida Lanai?
Salt air and constant humidity are the real test. Near the Gulf, 316 stainless resists pitting better than 304, and hardware, hinges and fasteners should match the cabinet grade. Granite and quartzite handle UV well, while engineered quartz in full sun can yellow. Plan for drainage too: summer storms blow rain sideways under most lanai roofs, so counters should shed water and cabinets should sit on legs or a raised base rather than flat on the deck. Lighting and outlets should be wet-rated and GFCI protected.

Covered lanais and screen cages add rules of their own. A grill under a roof needs the manufacturer's clearance to combustibles and usually a vented hood, and a screen enclosure needs enough height and airflow that smoke does not hang. Gas lines, new circuits and plumbing require permits from Lee County, the City of Bonita Springs or Collier County, and most HOAs want drawings before work starts. Our outdoor kitchen packages start from $18,000, and the free LiDAR scan shows exactly how a layout fits your lanai and pool deck.

## Outdoor Kitchen Ideas Questions

### Can I put an outdoor kitchen under my lanai roof?
Yes, and in Southwest Florida that is where most of them go, because shade makes the kitchen usable in summer. The grill needs proper clearances and usually an outdoor-rated hood vented through the roof. We check ceiling height, roof framing and the path for the vent during the free LiDAR scan.

### What appliances should an outdoor kitchen have?
Start with a built-in grill, a sink and an outdoor-rated refrigerator, which together cover most cooking and cleanup. Common next steps are a side burner, griddle, ice maker, beverage center and pizza oven. Choosing appliances first lets us size the counters, gas line and electrical correctly.

### Do outdoor kitchens need a permit in Lee or Collier County?
Usually, yes. A new gas line, plumbing or electrical circuits generally require a permit, and structural work on a lanai or pool deck may need one as well. HOAs often require their own approval first. We handle the drawings, permits and association submittals as part of the project.
