The short answer
The most popular master bathroom layouts group fixtures into three zones: a double or split vanity near the entry, a private toilet room, and a wet zone with the shower and tub. A wet room puts a freestanding tub inside a glass-enclosed shower area, which saves space and simplifies waterproofing. Split vanities on opposite walls give two people their own sink. Keeping fixtures on existing drain lines controls cost; moving them on a concrete slab is worth it when the current plan truly does not work.

## Which Master Bath Floor Plan Fits Your Room?
A side-by-side plan places a long double vanity on one wall with the shower and tub on the opposite side and the toilet tucked behind a door. It fits rectangular rooms and keeps plumbing on two walls. A split-vanity plan puts a sink on each side of the room, often with the wet zone centered between them, which gives each person storage and mirror space. The wet-room plan combines shower and tub behind one glass wall, typically in a zone about 8 to 10 feet wide, with a bench and handheld shower.

Clearances keep any plan comfortable. Building codes set minimums, such as 15 inches from a toilet's centerline to a side wall and 21 inches of clear space in front of it, but designers aim higher, usually 18 and 30 inches. Showers should be at least 36 by 36 inches to feel generous, and sinks in a double vanity work best about 36 inches apart on center. A toilet room near 3 by 5 feet with a pocket door feels private without wasting space. Doors should never swing into a fixture.

| Clearance | Code minimum | Comfortable target |
| --------- | ------------ | ------------------ |
| Toilet centerline to side wall | 15 in | 18 in |
| Clear space in front of toilet | 21 in | 30 in or more |
| Shower interior | 30 × 30 in | 36 × 36 in or larger |
| Sink centers in a double vanity | 30 in typical | 36 in or more |
| Toilet room | Not specified | About 36 × 60 in |
| Walkway in front of vanity | 21 in | 30–36 in |

## When Is Moving Plumbing on a Slab Worth It?
Nearly every home in Southwest Florida sits on a concrete slab, so drain lines run through the ground beneath the floor. Relocating a toilet, shower or tub means saw-cutting the slab, trenching to the main line with correct slope and repouring. It adds cost and a few days, but it is often the only way to get a separate toilet room or a wet room in a 1990s layout with a corner tub nobody uses. When the existing plan already has fixtures on the right walls, upgrading in place is the smarter spend.

Condos are different. Moving drains in a high-rise often crosses into the unit below or into a post-tensioned slab that must be scanned before cutting, and many associations limit relocations. In single-family homes in a flood zone, larger remodels can trigger the FEMA 50 percent substantial improvement rule, so the total project value should be reviewed before design is final. Permits come from Lee County, the City of Bonita Springs, Collier County or the City of Naples. The free LiDAR scan lets us test layouts in 3D before committing.

## Master Bath Layout Questions

### What is a wet room layout in a master bathroom?
A wet room places the tub inside a glass-enclosed shower zone, so both share one waterproofed area and one drain path. It saves floor space compared with separate tub and shower, makes the tub easier to clean around, and gives the bathroom a spa feel. It works well in rooms about 8 feet wide or more.

### How much does it add to move a toilet on a concrete slab?
It depends on distance to the main drain, the slab thickness and whether the move crosses other lines. The work involves cutting and trenching the slab, rerouting the pipe with proper slope and repouring. We price relocations after the LiDAR scan so you can compare layouts with real numbers.

### Is a separate toilet room worth it?
For most couples, yes. A small enclosed toilet room with its own door and exhaust fan adds privacy while the rest of the bath stays open. It needs about 3 by 5 feet and often fits by borrowing space from a closet or an unused corner tub.
