A laundry room countertop is usually a folding surface built over a side-by-side front-load washer and dryer, often continuing onto a sink base. Quartz is the most popular choice because it shrugs off water and stains without sealing; laminate is the budget option, and butcher block looks warm but needs regular sealing. The counter must be supported by wall cleats and end panels, sit with a small gap above the machines, and allow either appliance to slide out for service.

## How Is a Counter Built Over a Washer and Dryer?
The machines never carry the counter. A washer vibrates and walks during the spin cycle, so the top rests on a ledger or steel brackets fastened to the wall studs at the back and on finished end panels or cabinets at each side, leaving a small gap above the appliances. Depth is the detail people miss: front-loaders plus hoses and the dryer vent often need more than a standard 25-inch counter depth, so we measure the actual models, with doors open, before templating.

Height follows the machines, which usually puts a counter over front-loaders a little higher than a kitchen counter. Pedestals push it higher still, so most owners skip them when they want a folding surface. A sink run beside the machines should share the same top for a continuous surface. Edge profiles should be eased rather than sharp, since you lean over this counter with armfuls of laundry, and a short backsplash protects the wall from detergent spills. Plan an access path to the water valves, because a counter makes them harder to reach.

## What Works Best in a Florida Laundry?
Humidity and water favor nonporous surfaces. Southwest Florida laundry rooms handle wet beach towels, sandy pool gear and loads that sit damp on the counter, which is hard on butcher block and on laminate seams. Quartz and porcelain shrug that off, and a sealed granite top works well too. If the laundry is in the garage, remember the heat and the afternoon sun through an open door; quartz is fine out of direct sunlight but is not designed for steady UV exposure.

Seasonal owners with a full house of guests in winter tend to want a long folding run and a deep sink, while condo laundry closets may have room only for a narrow shelf beside stacked units. ### How do you support a countertop over a washer and dryer?
With a ledger or concealed steel brackets screwed into the wall studs at the back, plus end panels or base cabinets at each side. The counter should never rest on the machines. For stone, the span between supports and the bracket spacing are set by the fabricator so the top cannot sag or crack.
