The short answer
A traditional sauna heats the air with an electric heater and rocks, reaching roughly 150 to 195°F, and you can pour water on the rocks for bursts of steam. An infrared sauna warms your body directly with radiant panels while the air stays cooler, often 120 to 150°F. Infrared heats up faster and often runs on 120V in smaller units; traditional usually needs a dedicated 240V circuit and a longer warm-up. Choose by the heat you enjoy, the space you have and your electrical service.

## How Do Infrared and Traditional Saunas Compare?
The feel is the biggest difference. A traditional sauna surrounds you with hot air, and splashing water on the stones raises the humidity for a few minutes, the experience people know from Finnish-style saunas and many clubs. Infrared panels in the walls and benches warm skin and muscles directly, so the session feels gentler and you can stay in longer at a lower air temperature. Some people find infrared too mild; others find traditional heat too intense.

Practical differences follow from that. A traditional room typically needs 30 to 45 minutes to reach temperature, while infrared is usable in about 10 to 20. Traditional heaters are sized to the room's cubic footage and most need a 240V dedicated circuit; many one- or two-person infrared units plug into a dedicated 120V circuit, though larger ones need 240V. Both use the same basic construction: an insulated, wood-lined room with a vapor barrier, a bench and a tight door. Hybrid rooms combine a rock heater with infrared panels. Our home spa packages start from $18,500, and cost rises with room size, wood species, heater type, glass and lighting.

| | Infrared sauna | Traditional sauna |
| --- | -------------- | ----------------- |
| Heat source | Radiant carbon or ceramic panels | Electric heater with stones |
| Air temperature | About 120–150°F | About 150–195°F |
| Humidity | Dry | Dry, with steam bursts when water hits the stones |
| Warm-up time | About 10–20 minutes | About 30–45 minutes |
| Electrical | Often 120V for small units, 240V for larger | Usually 240V dedicated circuit |
| Feel | Gentle, longer sessions | Intense, classic sauna heat |
| Footprint | Can fit a closet-size space | Usually a slightly larger room for heater clearance |

## Which Suits a Florida Home Better?
Either type works here when it is built inside the conditioned house. Our outdoor humidity and summer heat make garages and lanais hard places for a sauna unless the unit is rated for outdoor use, and condensation can form on cool surfaces nearby. Cedar, hemlock and thermally modified woods tolerate Florida humidity well. Infrared is popular in condos and smaller homes because it fits tight spaces and often avoids a panel upgrade, while traditional rooms suit owners who want the classic heat and have room for a 240V circuit.

Many owners use a sauna for relaxation and recovery after golf, tennis or a day on the water, and the session time matters for that choice. If you like a short, hot session, traditional fits. For a longer, milder one, choose infrared. Electrical work needs a permit from the local building department, whether that is Lee County, the City of Bonita Springs, Collier County or the City of Naples. Condo associations usually want to review new circuits and any changes to shared walls before work begins.

## Infrared vs Traditional Sauna Questions

### Which uses more electricity, infrared or traditional?
Infrared units generally draw less power and heat up faster, so each session often uses less energy. Traditional heaters draw more and need longer to warm the room. Actual use depends on room size, heater rating and how long you run it.

### Can I combine infrared and traditional in one sauna?
Yes. Hybrid saunas pair a rock heater with infrared panels, so you can choose gentle radiant heat or classic hot-air sessions. They need space for both systems and usually a 240V circuit, which we plan during design.

### Do I need a permit to install a home sauna?
A plug-in prefab unit may not, but a built-in sauna with a new dedicated circuit generally needs an electrical permit, and condo associations often need to approve the work. We handle the permit and association paperwork as part of the project.
