The short answer
Most in-law suite floor plans fall into three groups: a studio with a sleeping area, kitchenette and bath in one open room; a one-bedroom suite with a separate bedroom and small living area; and an attached wing with its own entry and fuller kitchen. A comfortable studio usually needs around 300 to 450 square feet, a one-bedroom roughly 500 to 750. The best plans keep the bath step-free, place the kitchenette near the entry and give the suite a door of its own.

## What Are the Common In-Law Suite Layouts?
A studio suite is the most efficient. One room holds the bed, a sitting area and a kitchenette along one wall, with the bathroom next to the sleeping area. It works well as a garage or bonus room conversion. A one-bedroom suite adds a door between sleeping and living space, which matters when a parent stays for months or a caregiver visits. An attached wing is the most independent: a separate entry from the driveway or lanai, a living room, a bedroom and a kitchen large enough to cook real meals.

Placement of the wet areas drives cost. Putting the kitchenette and bathroom back to back, close to existing plumbing, shortens drain runs and limits slab cutting. A kitchenette typically includes a sink, a compact refrigerator, a microwave or small induction cooktop and a few cabinets, while a full kitchen adds a range and ventilation. Accessible design should be built in from the start: wide doorways, a curbless shower with a bench, blocking for grab bars and lever handles throughout.

| Layout | Typical size | Includes | Usually built as |
| ------ | ------------ | -------- | ---------------- |
| Studio | About 300–450 sq ft | Open bed and sitting area, kitchenette, bath | Garage or bonus room conversion |
| One-bedroom | About 500–750 sq ft | Bedroom, living area, kitchenette, bath | Bedroom wing conversion or addition |
| Attached wing | About 600–900 sq ft or more | Private entry, living room, bedroom, kitchen, bath | New addition |
| Guest suite | About 350–500 sq ft | Bedroom, bath, sitting room, coffee bar | Closed-off wing of the house |

## What Shapes an In-Law Suite in Southwest Florida?
Southwest Florida homes are usually single-story on a slab, which is good news for an in-law suite because step-free access comes naturally. The challenge is the slab itself: every new drain line means cutting and trenching concrete, so layouts that cluster plumbing save money. Garages are common conversion candidates, but if the garage floor sits below the house floor or the required flood elevation, it may need to be raised. Losing a garage bay can also conflict with HOA rules.

Seasonal patterns shape the plan too. Many families here host parents for the winter months or grandchildren in summer, so a suite that doubles as a guest room when empty adds flexibility. A separate mini-split lets the suite be cooled or set back independently of the main house. Whether a full kitchen is allowed depends on zoning in Lee County, Bonita Springs, Collier County or Naples, and some districts treat a second kitchen as a separate dwelling, so we check before finalizing the floor plan. Exterior access should include a covered path and good lighting from the driveway.

## In-Law Suite Questions

### How big should an in-law suite be?
Plan on roughly 300 to 450 square feet for a comfortable studio and 500 to 750 for a one-bedroom suite. The right size depends on how long your guest stays, whether they need a full kitchen and whether a caregiver will be visiting regularly.

### Can I convert my garage into an in-law suite?
Often, yes. A garage conversion is usually the fastest route, but it needs insulation, windows, a raised or leveled floor, plumbing for the bath and kitchenette, cooling and a permit. HOA rules on garage doors and parking also apply.

### Can an in-law suite have a full kitchen?
That depends on your zoning and HOA. Some jurisdictions allow it, while others limit secondary units to a kitchenette or treat a full kitchen as a separate dwelling with extra requirements. We confirm the rules for your property before design.
