The short answer
Installing a sauna in an existing home takes four things: a suitable dry space inside the conditioned house, the right electrical service, a ventilation path, and proper wall construction. Traditional saunas usually need a dedicated 240V circuit; many small infrared units run on 120V. The room is framed or set as a prefab kit, insulated, lined with a foil vapor barrier and finished in cedar, hemlock or aspen. Electrical work requires a permit, and condos add association approval.

## What Does a Home Sauna Installation Involve?
Location comes first. Closets, spare bathrooms, bath alcoves beside the primary shower and small spare rooms are common choices because they already sit near plumbing for a cool-down shower. A two-person traditional sauna needs roughly 4 by 6 feet with a ceiling around 7 feet, kept low so heat stays where you sit. Infrared saunas can be smaller and often arrive as prefab cabinets that assemble in a day, while custom traditional rooms are framed in place for a built-in look.

Construction follows a specific sequence. Walls and ceiling get insulation, then a foil vapor barrier, then tongue-and-groove wood with an air gap behind it. Benches are built from the same wood with hidden fasteners so nothing hot touches skin. The heater is sized to the room's cubic footage, mounted with manufacturer clearances, and wired with its controller outside or just inside the door. A low intake vent near the heater and a higher exhaust vent on the opposite wall move fresh air through the room. Our home spa packages start from $18,500.

| ---- | ----------------- | -------------- |
| Heat source | Electric heater with stones | Infrared panels in walls and benches |
| Typical temperature | 150–195°F | 120–150°F |
| Electrical | Dedicated 240V circuit for most heaters | Often 120V for small units; larger rooms may need 240V |
| Construction | Insulation, foil vapor barrier, wood lining | Usually a prefab cabinet; custom builds possible |
| Ventilation | Intake low near heater, exhaust high opposite | Simpler; built-in vents in most kits |
| Space | About 4 × 6 ft for two people | As small as 3 × 4 ft for one person |

## What Changes for a Sauna in Lee and Collier County?
Keep the sauna inside the air-conditioned envelope unless it is a model rated for outdoor use. Garages and lanais in Southwest Florida stay hot and humid, which stresses wood, electronics and door seals, and the sauna takes longer to heat when the surrounding air is damp. Inside the house, the vapor barrier matters because a hot room next to cool, conditioned walls can drive moisture into the framing. We also place the exhaust so warm air leaves the sauna without dumping into an attic.

Homes with 200-amp electrical service can usually handle a new 240V sauna circuit without trouble, though older or smaller panels may need an upgrade, and we check that during the free scan. A licensed electrician pulls the permit through the City of Bonita Springs, Lee County, Collier County or the City of Naples. In condos, the association typically reviews electrical work and anything that adds heat or exhaust. Owners commonly use the sauna after golf, tennis or a long day on the boat, for relaxation and recovery.

## Home Sauna Questions

### How much does it cost to install a sauna in a house?
Cost depends on the type of sauna, a prefab infrared unit or a custom traditional room, the size, the wood species, and how much electrical and finish work the space needs. Converting a closet with existing power costs far less than building a new room. We price your exact plan after a free scan.

### Do I need a permit to install a home sauna?
The electrical work for a new dedicated circuit generally requires a permit and inspection, and a licensed electrician should do it. Building new walls or changing plumbing nearby can add building permits. Condo associations usually require their own approval as well.

### What is the best wood for a sauna?
Western red cedar is the classic choice for its aroma and stability. Hemlock and aspen are popular for owners who prefer a lighter color or no scent, and they stay cooler to the touch on benches. All three handle heat and humidity well when installed over a proper vapor barrier.
