The best guest bedroom ideas make one room do two jobs. A wall bed or daybed lets the space work as an office, hobby room or gym most of the year and sleep visitors in season. Add a real closet with luggage space, blackout window treatments, a bedside outlet with USB, and, if the plumbing allows, a small en-suite bath or a refreshed hall bath nearby. In Southwest Florida, where guests arrive in winter and leave by Easter, flexibility matters more than a bed nobody uses for eight months.

## How Do You Turn a Spare Room Into a Guest Suite?
Start with the bed, because it sets the rest of the room. A wall bed, often called a Murphy bed, folds into a cabinet with a real mattress and can be flanked by shelving or a fold-down desk. A daybed with a trundle works for grandchildren, while a sleeper sofa suits a den that doubles as a TV room. If the room will be a full-time guest room, a queen bed with nightstands on both sides is the most comfortable choice, and it needs roughly a 10 by 11 foot floor area to leave walking room.

Storage is the second priority. Guests want a place to hang clothes and stash a suitcase, so a closet with a low rack, a few drawers and an open shelf beats a deep closet full of your own things. Lighting should include a ceiling fixture, a bedside lamp or sconce and a dimmable option. The most valuable upgrade is a bathroom: an en-suite carved from a large closet or adjoining space turns a spare room into a true guest suite, and it is the change most visitors notice.

## What Matters for a Florida Guest Room?
A room has to meet code to be called a bedroom when you sell, and that usually means an emergency escape window of the right size, a closet in many listings, and smoke alarms. If you are converting a den, loft or bonus room into a guest bedroom, check the window first. In hurricane country, that window also needs impact glass or shutters, and replacing it is permitted work with the City of Bonita Springs, Lee County or Collier County.

Because guest rooms sit closed for months, they are the first place mustiness shows up. Keep a supply register and a return path in the room, leave the door open or use an undercut when the house is empty, and choose tile or luxury vinyl over carpet if allergies are a concern. Adding an en-suite on a slab means cutting the floor for the drain and tying into the nearest stack, which is very doable but should be priced from a scan. Condo owners should get association approval before any plumbing work starts.

### Is a Murphy bed comfortable for guests?
A quality wall bed uses a standard mattress up to about 12 inches thick, so it sleeps like a regular bed. The mechanism should be anchored into studs or block with proper hardware. Built-in units with side cabinets and a desk look like furniture when closed and give you storage your guests can use.

### What are good spare room ideas besides a guest room?
Popular choices include a home office, gym, craft or music room, walk-in dressing room or a library. If you host only a few weeks a year, combine one of those with a wall bed or sleeper sofa so the room earns its square footage the rest of the year.

### Can I add a bathroom to a spare bedroom?
Usually, yes. A closet or part of an adjoining room can become a compact bath with a shower, toilet and vanity. On slab homes, the slab is cut to run drain lines to the nearest stack. It requires plumbing and electrical permits and, in condos, association approval.
