The short answer
Garage cabinets are closed storage built for the hottest, dampest room in the house. The best systems for Southwest Florida use powder-coated steel, aluminum or high-density polymer boxes rather than particleboard, hang on the wall or sit on adjustable legs so the floor stays clear, and pair with overhead racks and a sturdy workbench. Cost depends on the length of the run, the box material, the countertop and whether the garage gets insulation and a mini-split at the same time.

## What Makes a Good Garage Cabinet System?
Start with what the cabinets are made of. Melamine and particleboard units sold for indoor use swell and sag once they absorb garage humidity, and their shelves bow under paint cans and tool cases. Welded or bolted steel with a powder-coat finish is the most common upgrade, aluminum resists corrosion near the coast, and solid polymer or HDPE boxes shrug off water entirely. Doors should hang on sturdy hinges with soft-close or positive latches, and drawers need ball-bearing slides rated for real weight.

Layout comes next. Most homeowners put tall locker cabinets for long-handled tools and sports gear at one end, base cabinets with a work surface along the side wall, and upper cabinets above. Overhead racks hung from the ceiling framing handle holiday bins and luggage, and slatwall or rail systems keep bikes, ladders and fishing rods off the floor. Countertop choices include butcher block, stainless steel and phenolic or laminate tops, and each handles impacts and spills differently. A single wall of cabinets is a quick project; a full wraparound system with lighting and outlets takes more planning.

| Material | Humidity resistance | Strength | Notes |
| -------- | ------------------- | -------- | ----- |
| Particleboard or melamine | Poor, swells when damp | Fair | Fine indoors, short life in a hot garage |
| Powder-coated steel | Good while the coating is intact | High | Most common premium choice; touch up scratches |
| Aluminum | Excellent, does not rust | Good | Lighter weight; a good fit near salt air |
| HDPE or solid polymer | Excellent, waterproof | Good | Can be hosed off; fewer color choices |
| Marine-grade plywood, painted | Good when every face is sealed | High | Custom sizes; needs a durable finish |

## What Changes in a Florida Garage?
Heat is the first issue. An uninsulated garage in Bonita Springs or Naples can run far hotter than the house through the summer, and that heat breaks down adhesives, warps doors and shortens the life of anything stored inside. Many owners pair new cabinets with ceiling insulation, an insulated garage door and a ductless mini-split, which protects the cabinets and makes the space usable as a workshop. Steel boxes should carry a quality powder coat, and homes close to the Gulf benefit from stainless or coated hardware that will not rust in the salt air.

Water is the second. Hurricane Ian pushed storm surge into garages across Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Beach and low parts of Naples in 2022, and cabinets sitting on the slab took the damage first. Wall-hung cabinets or units on adjustable legs keep the bottom shelf off the floor, and raised outlets make cleanup safer after a flood. In a flood zone, plan to keep the space a garage, because local rules limit what can be finished below base flood elevation. HOAs rarely care about cabinets, but they often regulate garage door replacements and other exterior changes.

## Garage Cabinet Questions

### Are steel or wood garage cabinets better in Florida?
Steel, aluminum and polymer cabinets generally outlast wood-based boxes in a Southwest Florida garage because they do not absorb moisture. Painted marine-grade plywood can work for custom sizes if every face is sealed. Standard particleboard cabinets are the ones that fail, usually by swelling at the bottom edge within a few humid summers.

### Do garage storage cabinets need to be anchored?
Yes. Tall cabinets should be fastened to wall studs or block with the right anchors so they cannot tip, and overhead racks must hang from ceiling framing using hardware rated for the load. In block-wall homes we use masonry anchors sized for the loaded cabinet, which also keeps doors aligned over time.

### Can I add cabinets and still park two cars?
Usually. Most two-car garages fit base and upper cabinets along one side wall and tall lockers on the back wall while leaving room to open car doors. Depth matters, since garage base cabinets commonly run about 18 to 24 inches deep, so we measure door swing and vehicle length during the free LiDAR scan before finalizing the layout.
