The short answer
The most practical way to air-condition a Florida garage is a ductless mini-split, paired with insulation and an insulated garage door. Extending the home's ductwork into the garage is generally not allowed because it can pull exhaust fumes into the house, and portable units struggle against summer heat. Insulation matters as much as the equipment: an uninsulated block garage with a thin metal door will keep any unit running hard. Sizing should be based on a load calculation, not a guess.

## Which Garage Cooling Option Works Best?
A ductless mini-split has an outdoor condenser and one or more wall-mounted indoor heads connected by a small line set through the wall. It cools, dehumidifies and, on heat pump models, heats. It runs on its own thermostat, so you cool the garage only when you use it. Through-the-wall units are cheaper but louder and less efficient. Portable units vent hot air through a hose and rarely keep up in July.

The envelope is where most garages lose the battle. Many Southwest Florida garages have uninsulated block walls, an uninsulated ceiling under a hot attic and a single-skin steel door facing west. Adding foam board or furring and insulation to the walls, insulating the ceiling, sealing gaps and installing an insulated, weatherstripped door lets a smaller unit do the job. Running cost depends on the unit's efficiency rating, the size of the space, how well it is insulated and how many hours you cool it, which is why two similar garages can see very different power bills. Ceiling fans help move air but do not remove heat or moisture on their own.

| Option | How it works | Best for | Drawbacks |
| ------ | ------------ | -------- | --------- |
| Ductless mini-split | Outdoor condenser plus wall-mounted indoor head | Gyms, workshops, regular use | Higher upfront cost, needs a dedicated circuit |
| Through-wall unit | Self-contained unit set in a wall sleeve | Occasional use, small budgets | Louder, less efficient, less dehumidification |
| Portable unit | Rolls in, vents through a hose | Short-term spot cooling | Rarely keeps up in Florida summers |
| House ductwork extension | New duct run from the home system | Not recommended | Code and fume concerns, can overload the system |
| Insulation and door upgrade | Walls, ceiling, insulated door, seals | Every option above | Adds cost but cuts the size of unit needed |

## What Changes in a Florida Garage?
Humidity is half the problem. A garage that sits at high humidity all summer rusts tools, swells cabinets, mildews boxes and corrodes the metal parts of golf carts and bikes. A mini-split removes moisture as it cools, which is why many owners run it on a dry or dehumidify setting even on days they are not working out there. Keep the garage air separate from the house, though. Codes do not allow return air to be drawn from a garage, and a vehicle's exhaust should never reach your bedrooms.

The garage door deserves attention because it is the largest wall in the room. Replacement doors must meet Florida Building Code wind-load requirements, so an insulated, wind-rated door improves both comfort and storm resistance. Condensers belong on a pad or wall bracket out of flood-prone low spots, and coastal homes benefit from units with corrosion-resistant coatings. Most mini-split installs need an electrical permit and some HOAs review where the outdoor unit sits. Seasonal owners can leave a mini-split on a humidity setting while they are away, which protects whatever is stored in the garage until they return in the fall.

## Garage AC Questions

### What size mini-split do I need for a garage?
It depends on square footage, ceiling height, insulation, sun exposure and the garage door. A two-car garage with good insulation needs much less capacity than the same garage with bare block walls and a west-facing steel door. A proper load calculation sizes the unit so it cools and dehumidifies without short cycling.

### Can I just add a vent from my house AC to the garage?
It is not a good idea and is generally not allowed. Connecting the garage to the house system can pull car exhaust and fumes into living space, and the system was not sized for the extra load. A separate ductless unit keeps the air apart and lets you cool the garage only when needed.

### Should I insulate the garage before adding AC?
Yes. Insulating the walls and ceiling and upgrading to an insulated garage door often lets you install a smaller unit and lowers running costs. Without insulation, a Southwest Florida garage gains heat so fast that even a well-sized unit runs almost nonstop in summer.
