The short answer
A floating vanity is a cabinet mounted to the wall with open floor beneath it instead of sitting on a base or legs. It makes a bathroom feel larger because the floor runs uninterrupted to the wall, it is easy to clean under, and it lets you set the counter at any height. The tradeoffs: it needs solid blocking in the wall, the plumbing has to come out of the wall rather than the floor, and drawer space is shallower around the drain.

## How Is a Floating Vanity Mounted and Plumbed?
A loaded vanity with a stone top and full drawers is heavy, so it cannot hang from drywall anchors. With the wall open, we install continuous horizontal blocking between the studs, or a steel mounting bracket, and the cabinet's back rail is screwed through into that solid backing. The supply lines and drain have to exit the wall at heights that clear the drawers, and many floating designs use a U-shaped top drawer that wraps around the trap. If the existing drain comes up through the floor, it gets rerouted into the wall during the remodel.

The box itself can be slab or shaker, painted, stained or a rift-cut veneer, and it can run from 24 inches in a powder room to a full double vanity. Counter height is set to suit the people using it rather than a standard toe-kick base, so tall owners often go to 36 inches. LED tape on the underside washes the floor with soft light and doubles as a night light. Because nothing touches the floor, tile or heated flooring runs continuously to the wall, which helps a small bath feel open.

| Detail | Floating vanity | Standard base vanity |
| ------ | --------------- | -------------------- |
| Support | Blocking or steel bracket inside the wall | Sits on the floor |
| Plumbing | Supply and drain must exit the wall | Floor or wall drains both work |
| Counter height | Set to any height, often 32–36 in | Set by the cabinet, usually 32–36 in |
| Storage | Less depth near the trap; U-shaped drawers help | Full-height doors or drawers to the floor |
| Floor | Flooring and heat run to the wall; easy to clean | Floor stops at the toe kick |
| Lighting | Under-cabinet LED wash is common | Usually none below the cabinet |

## What Should Florida Homeowners Plan For?
Wall construction decides the mounting method. Interior bathroom walls in most Southwest Florida homes are wood or metal studs, which take blocking easily once the drywall is off. If the vanity sits on an exterior wall of concrete block, we anchor directly into the block with masonry fasteners or fur the wall out to run plumbing, since supply lines should not be buried in an exterior block wall without planning. In slab-on-grade homes, moving a floor drain into the wall means opening the slab, which we confirm during the scan.

Humidity is the other enemy. Bathrooms here see steam on top of already damp air, and a vanity box that hangs in that air for years needs plywood construction and a well-sealed finish rather than raw particleboard. A properly sized exhaust fan protects the cabinet as much as the paint. In condos, rerouting drains or opening a shared wall usually needs association sign-off. Seasonal owners should know a floating vanity has no hidden floor area where a slow leak can sit unnoticed, which makes problems easier to spot.

## Floating Vanity Questions

### How much weight can a floating vanity hold?
Mounted to solid blocking or a steel bracket, a floating vanity safely carries a stone top, sink and full drawers, plus someone leaning on the counter. The limit comes from the mounting, not the cabinet, which is why we never hang one from drywall alone and always install backing with the wall open.

### Can I install a floating vanity without opening the wall?
Sometimes, if the drain already comes out of the wall at a usable height and there is a stud layout you can fasten to. Most remodels open the wall anyway to add blocking and adjust plumbing, and that is the reliable way to do it.

### Are floating vanities good for small bathrooms?
Yes. Seeing the floor continue under the cabinet makes a small bath or powder room feel wider, and you can size the vanity shallower than a standard base. Under-cabinet lighting adds to the effect and gives a soft night light.
