The short answer
A custom kitchen island is built to fit your room and how you cook, instead of being chosen from stock box sizes. Good design starts with clearance: about 42 inches of walkway for one cook and 48 inches for two. Seating needs roughly 24 inches of width per stool and a 12 to 15 inch overhang depending on counter height. From there you choose storage, an appliance or sink, and the countertop. Cost is driven by size, cabinet line, appliances, plumbing or electrical moves, and the slab.

## How Do You Size and Plan a Kitchen Island?
Kitchen design guidelines give a reliable starting point. Work aisles should be at least 42 inches wide for a single cook and 48 inches when two people cook together, and walkways behind seated guests need more room so nobody squeezes past. For seating, plan about 24 inches of counter width per person. Knee space depends on height: around 18 inches deep at a 30-inch table height, 15 inches at a standard 36-inch counter and 12 inches at a 42-inch bar. A typical island for three stools runs seven to eight feet long.

Inside the island, deep drawers usually beat doors for pots and dishes, and a trash and recycling pullout near the sink is the most requested feature. A microwave drawer, beverage refrigerator, dishwasher or prep sink can all live here, but each one adds wiring or plumbing, and a cooktop adds ventilation decisions. Ends can be finished with panels, open shelves or a waterfall countertop. Cabinet construction matters too: semi-custom lines offer many sizes and finishes, while full custom allows any dimension, furniture-style legs and contrasting island colors.

| Planning item | Common guideline | Notes |
| ------------- | ---------------- | ----- |
| Aisle width, one cook | 42 in | Measured from island to opposite counter |
| Aisle width, two cooks | 48 in | Wider if appliances face each other |
| Seat width | About 24 in per stool | Add a few inches for arm chairs |
| Overhang at 36 in counter | About 15 in | Supports needed for longer overhangs |
| Overhang at 42 in bar | About 12 in | Raised bar hides prep mess |
| Overhang at 30 in table | About 18 in | Works with standard dining chairs |

## What Changes in a Florida Kitchen?
Most Southwest Florida kitchens sit on a concrete slab, so adding a sink or dishwasher to an island means cutting a trench in the slab for the drain and venting it properly, often with an approved air admittance valve or a vent loop. Outlets on an island are required by code, and a cooktop in the island brings a downdraft or ceiling hood into play. All of that is permitted work with the City of Bonita Springs, Lee County, Collier County or the City of Naples.

Humidity is hard on cabinet boxes, especially when owners leave for the summer, so we favor plywood construction and sealed finishes in island bases near sinks. Many homes open the kitchen to a lanai, which makes the island the main serving and gathering spot, so seating on two sides and an outlet for small appliances are popular. Condo owners should confirm association rules before moving plumbing. For those who want a clean, uncluttered counter, an InvisaCook induction cooktop installs beneath approved porcelain and sintered stone surfaces so the island top stays clear.

## Kitchen Island Questions

### How much space do I need for a kitchen island?
Allow about 42 inches of clearance on working sides for one cook and 48 inches for two, plus the island itself, which is usually at least 24 inches deep with seating overhang added. Many kitchens under about 12 feet wide are better served by a peninsula or a narrow cart.

### Can a kitchen island have a sink on a slab foundation?
Yes. The slab is cut to run the drain to the nearest line, the trench is backfilled and patched, and the sink is vented with an approved method such as an air admittance valve where local code allows. It requires a plumbing permit and adds cost, so plan it early.

### Is a custom island better than semi-custom?
Semi-custom lines offer many sizes and finishes and suit most kitchens. Full custom makes sense when you need odd dimensions, unusual storage, furniture details or a finish not offered elsewhere. Our showroom carries both, plus stock cabinets for fast projects.
