The short answer
A custom fireplace mantel is a shelf and surround built to fit your fireplace, wall and ceiling height rather than bought off a shelf. Styles range from a simple floating beam to a full paneled surround with columns and an overmantel that reaches the ceiling. In Southwest Florida, most new mantels frame an electric fireplace, often built into a media wall with the TV above. Price depends on the size, the wood or material, how much detail is carved or applied, and the finish.

## What Mantel Styles Work Best?
A floating beam mantel is a single shelf of solid wood or a box beam anchored to the wall, which suits modern and coastal rooms and is the simplest to install. A traditional surround adds legs, a frieze and crown molding, painted or stained, and can be scaled up with fluted pilasters and a raised panel overmantel. Contemporary designs often skip the shelf entirely and frame the firebox with large porcelain slabs, stone or wood slats, letting the material carry the look.

The build starts with measuring the opening, the wall and the ceiling so the proportions feel right. A mantel that is too small looks like an afterthought, and one too deep crowds the room. Finish carpenters typically build the surround in the shop from poplar, maple or MDF for paint, or oak, walnut or rift-sawn white oak for stain, then fit and scribe it to the wall on site. Electric fireplaces simplify clearances, but the manufacturer's spacing to combustibles still sets how close wood can sit to the firebox.

| Style | Materials | Look | Install |
| ----- | --------- | ---- | ------- |
| Floating beam | Solid wood, box beam, reclaimed wood | Modern, rustic or coastal | Anchored with hidden brackets |
| Traditional surround | Painted poplar or MDF, stained hardwood | Classic, formal | Shop-built, scribed on site |
| Full-height overmantel | Paneled wood, applied molding | Grand, architectural | Built to the ceiling |
| Slab or stone surround | Porcelain, natural stone, Designer Stone Panels | Minimal, contemporary | Set over a framed backing |
| Media wall surround | Wood, drywall, stone with built-in cabinets | Integrated with TV | Framed bump-out with wiring |

## What Changes in a Florida Living Room?
Wood-burning fireplaces are rare in Southwest Florida homes, so most mantels here frame a linear electric fireplace or a decorative surround with candles or a gas-free insert. That opens up design freedom, because electric units need far less clearance than combustion fireplaces and can go on any wall with a nearby circuit. Some models need a dedicated circuit, and adding one through block walls is permitted electrical work.

Humidity and summer shutdowns move solid wood, so stain-grade mantels should be built from stable species, sealed on every face and fastened in a way that allows slight movement. Painted MDF stays flat but must be kept away from any moisture source. A mantel is often the focal point of a living room facing a lanai, so sightlines from the kitchen and seating matter. Condo owners in Bonita Springs and Naples should check association rules on electrical work and wall anchoring before installation. For a heavy stone surround, we confirm the wall can carry the weight and add backing or mechanical anchors into the block where needed, since adhesive alone is not enough for large slabs.

## Fireplace Mantel Questions

### How high should a fireplace mantel be?
Many mantels sit roughly 54 to 60 inches above the floor, but the right height depends on the firebox, ceiling height and whether a TV hangs above. With a TV, a lower mantel and a slim linear fireplace keep the screen at a comfortable viewing height. Always follow the fireplace manufacturer's clearance chart.

### Can you add a mantel to an electric fireplace?
Yes. Electric fireplaces are the most common choice for new mantels in Florida. The surround is built around the unit, with access for service and the electrical connection, and the manufacturer sets the spacing to the mantel shelf and any TV above.

### What wood is best for a custom mantel?
For paint, poplar or MDF give smooth results. For stain, white oak, walnut and maple are popular because they are stable and attractive. In humid homes, choose kiln-dried lumber, seal every face, and allow for slight seasonal movement.
