The short answer
A built-in window seat is a bench constructed under or into a window, usually framed by shelving or cabinets, with storage below and a cushion on top. It turns a window into a reading nook and adds hidden storage without taking much floor space. A comfortable seat sits about 17 to 19 inches high, including the cushion, and 18 to 24 inches deep. Drawers are easier to use than a lift-up lid, and shelving on both sides makes it feel like part of the room.

## How Is a Window Seat Built?
A window seat is a cabinet with a seat on top. The base is a sturdy box anchored to the wall and floor, built to carry adult weight, with either deep drawers, doors or a hinged lid for storage. Drawers on full-extension slides are the most practical because you can reach blankets and books without removing the cushion. Seat depth of 18 inches works for sitting upright, while 24 inches or more lets you curl up or lean back against the side panels.

The surround is what makes it a nook. Bookshelves or tall cabinets on each side create a frame, and an arched or squared valance across the top can add a reading light. Some designs add a bench back panel or wainscoting below the window. Sconces on swing arms or small recessed lights give reading light at night, and an outlet or USB port on the side panel keeps a phone charged. Cushions are custom cut to the opening, often with a removable cover. Our home library packages start from $12,000, and a window seat can stand alone or anchor a full library wall.

| Element | Typical size or option | Notes |
| ------- | ---------------------- | ----- |
| Seat height | About 17–19 in including cushion | Similar to a standard chair |
| Seat depth | 18 in to sit; 24 in or more to lounge | Deeper seats need a wider alcove |
| Cushion | 2–4 in foam with a removable cover | Outdoor-rated fabric resists fading |
| Storage | Drawers, doors or a lift-up lid | Drawers avoid moving the cushion |
| Surround | Bookshelves or tall cabinets on each side | Creates the nook effect |
| Lighting | Swing-arm sconces or small recessed lights | Plan wiring before the cabinetry |

## What Should Florida Homeowners Know About Window Seats?
Sun is the biggest factor. A seat under a west- or south-facing window in Southwest Florida gets intense afternoon heat and UV, which fades fabric and dark wood finishes and can make the seat too hot to use. Low-E or tinted glass, solar shades and a cushion made with solution-dyed or outdoor-rated fabric hold up much better. Impact windows, standard in much of this area, are heavier and deeper, and the seat has to be built around their frames and trim without blocking operation.

Humidity affects storage. Books, blankets and photo albums stored in a closed cabinet can pick up a musty smell in a humid house, especially if the AC is set high while a seasonal owner is away. Ventilated drawer fronts or a small gap at the back help air move, and keeping the home's humidity controlled protects everything. Window seats on exterior concrete block walls are anchored with masonry fasteners. Adding a reading light means a new circuit or a tap from an existing one, which requires an electrical permit.

## Window Seat Questions

### How deep should a window seat be?
About 18 inches works for sitting upright, while 24 inches or more lets you curl up or stretch out with pillows behind you. If the alcove is shallow, a deeper seat can project slightly into the room, framed by cabinets on each side.

### Can a window seat have storage?
Yes, and most do. Drawers on full-extension slides are the most convenient, since you do not have to lift the cushion. Doors and lift-up lids also work and are easier to fit when the seat is short or the opening is narrow.

### How do I keep a window seat cushion from fading in Florida?
Use solution-dyed acrylic or another outdoor-rated fabric, add solar shades or UV-filtering window film, and choose low-E glass when windows are replaced. Rotating or flipping the cushion every few months also evens out sun exposure.
